What sambrani (loban) is, what it's called in English, what it's made of, and how it's traditionally made in an ashram.
If you've ever walked past a temple at dusk and caught a sweet, resinous smoke curling through the air, you've met sambrani. It's one of the oldest and most loved fragrances in Indian worship — but "what exactly is it, and what is it made of?" is a question a lot of people quietly wonder. Here's the simple answer.
What is sambrani (loban)?
Sambrani is a natural tree-resin incense burned in pooja. Unlike an agarbatti or dhoop, it isn't rolled onto a stick — it's pure resin. When you warm it (on charcoal, or in a quick-light cup), it melts and releases a slow, sweet, full-bodied smoke that has been used for generations to mark prayer, calm a room, and welcome guests.
Sambrani in English & its other names
People search for sambrani under many names, because it travels across languages and regions:
- In English — sambrani is usually called benzoin resin or gum benzoin.
- Loban — the common North-Indian and Urdu name for the same resin.
- Sambrani podi — "podi" simply means powder in Tamil.
- Benzoin / styrax — the botanical source (the Styrax tree).
So if a recipe or a shop lists "benzoin resin," "loban," or "sambrani podi," they're all pointing at the same thing.
What is sambrani made of?
Pure sambrani starts with benzoin (styrax) tree resin — the fragrant sap that hardens when the bark is tapped. Traditional blends may add natural herbs, halmaddi, or sandalwood for depth. What good sambrani should not contain:
- Real benzoin / styrax resin
- Natural herbs, halmaddi or sandalwood
- Nothing synthetic
- Charcoal filler to bulk it up
- Synthetic fragrance oils
- That sharp, "chemical" note when lit
How sambrani is made — the ashram way
The character of sambrani comes from how it's made. Ours is hand-blended at our ashram: real resin, ground and combined with natural botanicals, with no charcoal filler and no synthetic perfume. Because PremaNature is a WFTO Guaranteed Fair Trade member, the people who make it are paid fairly — provenance you can actually verify.
The difference between pure resin and a charcoal-and-perfume blend is something you can smell in the first few seconds.
What is sambrani used for?
Sambrani is burned for pooja and aarti, to fragrance and settle a home before prayer, during meditation, and to welcome guests. Its smoke is prized for being calming and grounding. (For the deeper why and the benefits people associate with it, and for step-by-step burning, see the guide linked below.)
How to tell pure sambrani from filler
- ✓Real resin, no charcoal filler — pure sambrani smells sweet and round, not sharp.
- ✓No synthetic fragrance — natural botanicals only.
- ✓Verifiable provenance — ours is ashram-made and WFTO Guaranteed Fair Trade.
Sambrani vs dhoop vs agarbatti
Sambrani is pure resin smoke (no stick). Dhoop and agarbatti are rolled or shaped incense. Camphor is different again — the clean aarti flame. If you're building a pooja tray, you'll often want all of them; see How to Burn Camphor for Pooja & Aarti.
