What is vibhuti called in English?

Vibhuti is known in English as "holy ash" or "sacred ash". In different Indian traditions it is also called bhasma or thiruneeru.

What is vibhuti made of?

Authentic vibhuti is made from dried cow dung burned in a sacred fire, then cooled, sieved and purified. Ours is prepared each month in a ritual fire at our ashram, with no chemical fillers.

How do I apply vibhuti?

Take a pinch between thumb and ring finger and draw it across the forehead as a tilak — traditionally three horizontal lines. Many also apply it to the throat and arms during prayer.

How should I store vibhuti?

Keep it dry in a closed container away from moisture. Stored well, it does not spoil — ash is already fully purified by fire.
