How to Burn Camphor for Pooja & Aarti

What pooja camphor is, how to burn it safely for aarti, and how to choose pure, ashram-made camphor.

Camphor — kapoor — is one of the most sacred elements of Hindu worship. Its bright, cooling aroma and clean, complete flame make it central to aarti: the lit camphor circled before the deity, leaving no residue, is a symbol of the ego burning away entirely. This guide covers what pooja camphor is, how to burn it safely, and how to tell pure camphor from the cheaper blended kind.

What is pooja camphor?

Pooja (or "bhimseni-style") camphor is the aromatic, sublimating camphor used in worship — distinct from edible camphor and from industrial camphor. Good pooja camphor lights easily, burns with a steady flame, and evaporates cleanly, leaving little or no black residue.

How to burn camphor for aarti (safely)

A safe aarti, step by step
  • 1Place one or two tablets in a camphor lamp or a heat-safe aarti holder — never directly on a surface.
  • 2Light the tablet; let it settle into a steady flame before lifting.
  • 3Circle it gently before the deity, clockwise, then let it burn out fully in the holder.
  • 4Keep it away from curtains and loose clothing, and burn in a ventilated space.

A little goes a long way. One or two tablets is enough for a daily aarti.

Camphor, sambrani and dhoop — how they differ

All three belong to the pooja tray, but they do different things. Camphor gives the clean aarti flame. Sambrani is a tree resin that gives slow, fragrant smoke. Dhoop is shaped incense for lasting ambient fragrance. Many households use all three together — read our companion guide, What Is Sambrani?.

How to choose pure camphor

Cheaper camphor is often cut with paraffin or synthetic fillers, which is why it can smoke heavily, smell harsh, or leave a black residue. When you buy, look for:
